WEZ Activities

Over the years WEZ has become multi-faceted.  WEZ approaches its objectives through a wide range of different activities:

  • Wildlife Management; in different protected areas and game parks
  • Environmental Education; with Environmental Education Centres throughout the country
  • Field Activities; snare sweeps, animal rescue, development of nature reserves and protection of endangered species and habitats
  • Research; environment and wildlife
  • Networking; with local, regional and international organisations
  • Publication: of ‘Zimbabwe Wildlife’ magazine, newsletters and other publications

WEZ runs an Environmental Education Programme through six Environmental Education Centres. The centres are situated in:

  • Fort Rixon Environmental Education Centre (FREE) in Matabeleland
  • Kaburi Environmental Education Centre [Programme for Environmental Awareness Kariba (PEAK)] in Kariba
  • Hurungwe Environmental Awareness For Life Programme (HEAL) at Ryding School in Karoi area
  • Lowveld Environmental Awareness Programme (PEAP) in Chiredzi
  • Kwekwe Environmental Education Programme (KEEP) in Sable Park, Kwekwe
  • Sebakwe Environmental Education and Awareness Centre next to Midlands Black Rhino Conservancy

The officers running the centres work closely with the schools and rural communities in their respective areas. The programme has been running since 1991 and has become very popular with the communities involved.

WEZ appreciates the support given to some of these centres by LED, DED and SAVE Australia. We are looking for support so that we can increase our environmental education activities to Mutare and Masvingo.
